Kayak Polo

Game

The game is played in many countries on all continents, for recreation and serious sport. The sport has World Championships every two years. Internationally the sport is organized by the Canoe Polo Committee of the International Canoe Federation as one of the disciplines of the sport of canoeing. In 2005 Kayak Polo was contested at the World Games in Duisburg Germany under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee.

Practice on the river Cam

The game is often described as a combination of water polo, basketball and canoeing. The tactics and game play polo is not unlike basketball or water, but the added complexity of the ships, which can be used to protect the ball.

Some of the best players in the world have come from Australia, with three times World Champion gold medalist Duncan Cochrane, Brett Houghton and Keith McChlery all playing in the successive 1994, 1996 and 1998 Australia mens team.

Rules

The ball, water polo ball is passed from hand to hand among the players, some use the shovel on the ball also allowed. A player in possession may be addressed by being pushed over on the shoulder or back, players can only have the ball in his possession for a maximum of five seconds. Players can "dribble" throwing the ball a meter or more, ahead of themselves, or sideways in the water. Most of these relate to the safety of the players involved. For eg change illegal entry into the playing area (see below), the illegal use of the palette, the illegal action against a player he turned, vie for detecting illegal illegal. Penalties include objectives and sideline shots, free kicks, penalty goal and penalty cards.

Substitutions may made at any time during the game without notifying the referee, the player has to cross the line before another player can go on. If these rules are not followed A player is designated by the captain of the offending team being removed from the game (Kicked).

Country

Canoe polo is played both inside the outdoor pools or a field to be measured 35 meters by 23 meters. The edges of the field are marked on the sides of the pool, or better, floating ropes (Similar to lane markers in swimming).

Arbitrators

No two referees (one on each side of line) and are on foot and not on boats. The result is kept by the scorekeeper and the timekeeper controls the playing time and the time of expulsion. The goal lines are supervised by two linesmen. Before you start the game tellers see all the kit for regulatory compliance

Objectives

The objectives (measuring 1 by 1.5 meters) is a framework with network suspended six feet above the water. A player acting as goalkeeper defends the goal with his shovel sticking up vertically, it will affect the special rules goalkeeper, such as the attacking team not being able to interfere with or push them. The length of the pallets used by the porters are often longer than those used by other players.

Time

The game is officially played as a game of 20 minutes consisting of two halves of 10 minutes. The teams swap ends in halftime. Each half begins with a "sprint" in which each line unite against their goal line and the ball is thrown into the middle of the pitch by the referee. One player from each team races to gain possession of the ball.
