bow hunting range

hi. i have recently gotten into rifle hunting and now and looking to get into bow hunting. i was wondering what is the minimum or normal draw weight or required draw weight to take down deer and turkey. next i do not want to get a composite bow and some fancy arrows. i would like to go old school and use a longbow and arrows heads made by my blacksmith friend. i have a few choices of bows to choose from but the easiest to get would be from bass pro the fred bear Montana longbow. would this be sufficient to hunt with or what would some suggestions be for some other longbow.
i worked at a summer camp at the bow range and after a week i could lob arrows all the way across the field and hit the target. what is the effective or humane range to take game with a bow? not that i want to go for any long distance shots.
what are some pros or cons to going old school and not using all sorts of new bows and arrows?
thank you for the help
john.
I’m proud that you have chosen to shoot a traditional bow. Avoid the homemade broad heads. the name of the game is consistency. Many states have a 40lb pull at 28″ draw requirement. This will put a sharp arrow through a deer. You need to practice all you can and don’t take shots farther than you can consistently drill a paper plate. Thirty yards or so is the usual limit. You need to find a traditional archer who can teach you. The compound shooter doesn’t know what you need. Most compound shooters have never used a longbow or recurve.
