Sand Hills State Park is an exclusive from south to north central attraction of Hutchinson, Kansas. Through a series of forty dunes dating from the end of the ice age, this sand prairie was formed when the howling winds deposited sand from the Arkansas River. The Hills of sand were then anchored by the roots of native prairie grasses, making their appearance more typical of the U.S. east coast in mid territory the country. Surprisingly alive with vegetation, the dune area interior is decorated with grasses, sedges, shrubs and wildflowers loan lilac, gold, green and red in the landscape. To get a perspective of an insider in the Hills sand dunes, forests and water, guests can walk or ride a horse in one of the several park trails, where participation is likely to see green herons, bluebirds, coyotes or evidence of the plains pocket gophers.
In central Kansas region mountainous north of Canton, Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and neighboring McPherson State Fishing Lake are great places to observe wild west such as bison and elk. Herds of 200 American buffalo and 50 elk live in Maxwell hills. Free-roaming bison can be seen on the roads of refuge, and from the observation tower in the park or guided tram tours sponsored by a private group called "Friends of Maxwell." Rusty color buffalo calves born during the months of April, May and June grow to develop the more typical dark brown coat of adult bison during the fall season. Also in the autumn is especially captivating to see elk bull elk bugle and down in their efforts to attract women into harems.
