Through the Snowdonia National Park in Wales with the Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway

Narrow, rusty rails curve of the dark, slate gray and green velvet mountains of Snowdonia in Wales Blaenau Ffestiniog Station, on the threshold of the single street of stone architecture in the city of Wales. Misty clouds, as a transparent cover, enveloping the mountains in the drilling, 50-degree temperatures, while the smoke from the chimneys of groups in the city fills the air with aroma almost-welcome. the heat would only match the smell! Rupture of the south with his whistle and emit bilious smoke from its stack, the steam went black mountain tunnel after an hour, ten minutes of ascent from Porthmadog.

Although the current season have been built on the site of the former Ffestiniog / Great Western Railway Station in 1833, the original line was finished in Ffestiniog Duffws, which has opened for passenger operations in 1866 and closed in 1930. The Blaenau Ffestiniog modern station opened in 1982, was a joint facility with Network Rail Conway Valley Branch Line.

A lurch, created by the initial hitches car couplings, and a second whistle, preceded by initial movement of the train beyond the platform. Sandwiched between gray rock walls, built apparently slate of tracing paper thin, the relatively tiny steam engine, pulling the chain tight bogies of passenger cars fell through a tunnel at night transforming, re-emerging on top of green hills.

The Ffestiniog Railway had its origins in the mining industry. An important demand housing, along with the slate roof for them, had been created by the Industrial Revolution, and the mountains of North Wales, rich in resources, were quickly get a large amount of rail lines linking the high elevation of mines seaport level.

In 1798, WA MADOCKS, acquisition of certain parcels of land, made a series of recovery projects, including the Traeth Mawr coast, extending inland from Puerto Aberglaslyn, and the Great Embankment, known as the "ear", through the estuary. The Cob itself, the diversion of the river Glaslyn, created a natural harbor called Port Madoc who later became known as "Porthmadog.

Initial deposit tunneling occurred in the mountains near of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The product, transported by pack animal farm carts over rough road to the Dwyryd River, was transferred to the little craft project and carried downstream to transfer more to large vessels.

The primitive, manual available soon proved unable to meet demand and a railroad, surveyed by James Spooner, from Worcestershire, was built and incorporated as the Ffestiniog Railway by an Act of Parliament on 23 May 1832. Despite running ramp, continued to be used without engine propulsion induced by gravity during the descent and runs a horse during the return. To 23.5 inches, the narrow gauge, corresponded to that of the railways of the quarry, and proved to be advantageous in both operational phases: it was broad enough to allow horses to transport efficiently empty carts in the mountains, but narrow enough to allow easy negotiation of curves multitudinous provisions of mountainous terrain.

The demand soon eclipsed the horse-gravity chain system pointed out the need for steam power engine, but this proved unworkable initially due to two insurmountable restrictions:

  1. Operation of a steam engine so narrow gauge had been conceived as practical.
  2. Passengers could only be legally carried British standard gauge, of 4 feet, 8.5 inches.

710 downwards feet at sea level, the narrow-gauge chain made the steep, one-mile sprint Summit Tanygrisiau court, where he joined a train to Blaenau Ffestiniog, already stopped on the other track. Originally opened in 1866, who had been a continuous gradient to Boston Lodge to allow gravity to remove their cars heavy, slate-filled toward the coast. The station itself had not been reopened as part of the later tourist railroads until 1978. After a brief pause, the train once again regained momentum.

The restrictions, which hamper the application of steam technology on the road, were not surpassed until Charles Easton Spooner, James Spooner son, took over the railroad in 1856 and then to bid to design and build a locomotive or award a contract for up to seven years later, in 1863, George England and the company for four small locomotives. The first one, the princess, in a 0-4-0 configuration with side Tenders for coal, became the first passage of self-propelled narrow-gauge steam engine, when it had entered service with the Ffestiniog Railway In October of that year. Mountaineer, entering service at the same time, has been followed by the Prince and Palmerston in 1864. The Prince had won several titles, including more work on the Ffestiniog Railway engine, the engine's oldest working worldwide, and that of the oldest still in the configuration of the steam engine in its original line, but his offer had been converted to carry oil compared with the original coal, to reduce fire danger on the line.

The Board ultimately granted permission of rail for passenger transport, which makes first British narrow gauge line passenger transport by rail, stone, although initially only takes. Increased demand was satisfied with the introduction of two locomotives, the Welsh pony and the little giant in 1867. The first, built by George England as a larger, more capable successor to the original four engines, saddle tanks had offered from the start, while the former had been reconfigured from this standard.

Skirting around the left side of the silver surface contained lake, the Ffestiniog Railway flew past the white sheep grazing, which almost seemed like a topographic extension of the implementation, green velvet hills. immersed in a tunnel carved out the mountain, which was again enveloped in darkness, the internal lights temporarily provide the only illumination.

Two kilometers before Dduallt arrived, the train followed a 35-foot-high spiral deviation, which was rebuilt in 1965 that the nuclear power Ffestiniog failed to install. The station of himself, opened in 1865 and operates its own Master station before World War II, went unabated.

Platform for Campbell after in rapid succession, was a private station, who had served Dduallt Manor, a small cottage in part, dating from the 15th century. Colonel Andrew Campbell, it was an explosives driver license and had helped build the spiral Dduallt, had bought the house in 1962 and had caches its diesel locomotive in his shed, using travel as far as Bwlch Tan.

Upon exiting the tunnel and maintain a high Garnedd sharp squeal like spark the wheels of their cars Travelers returning to the tour, the train passed the tall, thin pine needle and Llyn Mair (Mair Lake) became visible through the windows to the left. Briefing stop and Bwlch Tan, allowed two passengers. Inaugurated in 1873, Tan and Bwlch had closed 66 years later, in 1939 and was revived with the restoration in 1958.

The Engines Ffestiniog Railway later, even more powerful had proved only a temporary remedy, as the growing demand indicates the need for additional runway a law authorizing it so was passed in 1869. However, the cost and engineering obstacles to double the existing line was not prohibitive and the solution again lies in the design of an even more powerful engine that can push more, higher-capacity trains. This design, however, that incorporates the optimal mix of features, like an inherent contradiction, since, while a larger, more powerful engine would be able to carry heavier trains longer, would be equally unable to round the sharp curves and steep features save the narrow-gauge mountain railways miners topography.

The solution emerged from Robert Fairlie, a railway engineer who designed a double bogie engine, surprisingly, at A 0-4-4-0T configuration consisting of a single time, the boiler rigid, but erroneously listed as two small locomotives together like bookends. Built by the Fairlie engine and vapor transport company, was more than twice the power of smaller engines only but could easily negotiate the road bends and steep slopes.

In 1872, the Ffestiniog Railway also became the first user of passenger coaches bogie in Britain.

Although the line flourished for about 83 years, less expensive slate tiles replaced eventually as roofing material and their purpose gradually decreased until, in 1946, had been forced to cease operations. The locomotive of the original princess had been the last to run. The Welsh Pony had undergone major repairs in 1891 and 1915, but the boiler had been condemned in 1938.

A Conservation Society, founded to restore and reopen the line, rebuilt a 2.5-mile trail section that had been flooded in order to make way for a hydroelectric plant, and today enjoying a resurgence of rail as a steam engine, narrow tourist train that travels 13 miles between the size and Blaenau Ffestiniog Porthmadog several times a day.

Belching clouds of white smoke, the steam went Plas Alto, a station was opened in 1963 to serve as and Plas Bwlch, a house in the 1600s and the seat of the family of Oakley, owner of a quarry in the late 18th century until 1961. In 1975 the house had become a Snowdonia residential study center. Now, in a 375 meters high and half of its journey of 13 nautical miles laterally and hit cars sounded their wheels over the narrow lanes. A river meanders seemed to fall below the train receded as the valley below.

The Ffestiniog Railway operated a variety of restoration, the narrowness of the cars gauge bogie passenger, typical of which had been number 11. Built in 1880 by the Gloucester Wagon Company of Gloucester, who had served as a vehicle Railway No. 4, but was rebuilt during the period 1928-1929 as a passenger-car brake. Reentering Service in 1956 with the new, after rail Tourist miner, who later appeared in an observation room windows and end after a repair the second consecutive year, and was mounted on a steel frame in 1967.

The current number 12, besides having been built by the Gloucester Wagon Company and has served as a vehicle of No. 5 had seen as a passenger and car brake after reconstruction 1929-1930. One of the first two cars to be restored by the Preservation Society, which re-entered service in 1955, and two years later had been equipped with a counter of a buffet and a side aisle, and is coupled to Transportation Issue 11. Having been lengthened and mounted on a steel frame, which operated for 20 years until 1982 saw the elimination of renewing the fight against the buffet and the installation a new seating arrangement.

My car is set to double seats in the seats to the left and one on the right, which were upholstered in fabric red boards separated by fine-grained. The first class compartment, located halfway in the car, had been visited by the opening of hinged doors in either sections foreign coach, which was decorated with blue pairs on both sides upholstered seat and wood grain tables apart. The carriage was vaulted ceiling and panels Timber covered their walls. Train attendants took orders for hot drinks, crisps and chocolates, cakes and cookies, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Rhiw Goch, a crucial point in the original Ffestiniog Railway, was the station, where freight trains down together with the void, the ancestors. A station horse stage between 1836 and 1863 had been the location of the contractors, provided the horses that transported slate empty wagons at every stage. The horses were transported to the stage station wagons dandy.

Stop at Penrhyn in 1305, the train was within ten miles of Blaunau Ffestiniog and at an elevation of 160 feet. The station, opened in 1865, had been rebuilt with material from the former Porthmadog station in 1879. The stop had been reopened with Ffestiniog railway again in 1956.

Throws an undulating track heavy steam engine led chain of cars snaking through low vegetation, dense, having left the high elevation of the mountains behind him.

Minffordd, opened in 1872, was exchanged with the railway line Cambrian Coast and the site of the Engineering Depot outdoors in the trans-shipment ex slate Yard.

The silver-gray surface of the harbor, visible forward and to the left, now separated by Marsh flat that stretches from the slopes to the coast.

Boston Lodge, which originally opened in 1928, was the location of the Boston Lodge works, the quarry of stone used in construction of the ear between 1808 and 1811, while the Boston Lodge itself had been the office and stables during construction. 1856 Weigh House, perched at the top, have been used to weigh the cargo trains slate down, but later Minffordd was replaced in 1872.

Following the coast, the train back to the left on the tracks flourished in six and stopped at Porthmadog station, originally opened in 1865 and now live with the crowd awaiting the ascent back to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Line either slate of traction for the mining, transport passengers for profit, or transport of leisure tourists had managed to maintain their usefulness for some 150 years.
