Keighley, West Yorkshire – Where I live
An article describing my hometown Keighley with details about living and working in the city and tourism.
"The dark satanic mill town of Keighley" I've never forgotten that headline from a national newspaper in the late 60's. The article was about the team Keighley rugby league now called Keighley Cougars.
Back then, wherever you see on the horizon you could see mill chimneys towering over the rest of the city. The factory chimneys were gradually demolished and now as Keighley is located in a valley, you can see fields and trees in the distance from almost any point of view.
Keighley in the West Riding of Yorkshire was a large manufacturer of textiles, but now the mill buildings that were not burned or vandalized have become smaller units that offer a wide variety of businesses or households.
The population was over 51,000 in the 2001 census and apparently is the third largest civil parish in England. Approximately 18% of the population of ethnic minorities, adding a multicultural aspect of the city and some Indian restaurants, Italian and Chinese. Keighley is pronounced 'lee Keeth, "but annoying to many people outside Keighley people insist on calling the Keeley city.
Transportation
Traveling to and around Keighley is not difficult. We have a train station and a new award winning station closed bus in the center of the city with regular transport around the area and easy access to many cities. Bradford is 10 miles away and Leeds and 20 miles away of course the Leeds-Bradford Airport is easily accessible.
There are plenty of reliable taxi companies in Keighley and have found that using a combination different means of transport and feet do not really need my own transportation, because everything is within walking distance. Also cheaper to have my half transport gas-guzzling own.
Shopping
We have a modern shopping center and several industrial parks that offers almost everything you might want to buy. If you want to buy some new clothes that are a little different that make a day of it and take a 20 minute train journey from Leeds and the store or center city or visit the White Rose Centre.
Keighley has a permanent closure in the market and quite often have visiting continental markets offering a wider range of products.
Leisure
We have several parks in the area with lots of green space for children to run around and secure fencing games bowling green etc. We have an entertainment center in Victoria Park, where there is a modern swimming pool with slide and a gym. Victoria Park is home to our annual gala in the summer and occasionally visiting circuses and fairs. Within the park is Victoria Hall, where the functions and concerts are often held.
There is a museum in Cliff Hall in the grounds of Castle Cliff, where exhibitions were held. For families there is a fenced playground and a cafe. Picnic tables are provided for those who are like my grandchildren who prefer picnic in between running. There was a small zoo with guinea pigs and birds than the last time I went in the summer. Years ago there were monkeys, but Now all the monkeys in the area seem to reside in a house next to my mother. More than 50 than you think!
Lund in the park are 2 playgrounds, one for children major and a fenced area for youngsters. There is a bowling green and a putting green and a bike path with slopes that my grandson age 4, loves to skateboard at.
Nights out
There has always been a lot of pubs in the area, perhaps because we have a winning brewery in the city. If you want to eat outside there are many restaurants offering different food culture. Nightclubs are a bit thin on the ground with only 2 of catering for different age ranges and are not as good. But there are plenty of good clubs in the distance traveled in Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield even further.
Tourism
Keighley is part of Bronte Country, just a few miles from Haworth, where the famous literary Bronte family lived. In addition to traditional media, you can travel through Oxenhope Haworth on the Keighley and Worth Valley line from Keighley station on a steam train in the summer. This is a line of heritage and has been used for locations of several films including The Railway Children, Yanks and musical film 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd.
At the first stop 300 meters from where I live in Ingrow Railway Museum is a travel. It is also the point of departure of Thomas the Tank Engine days out.
I took my grandchildren last summer and could climb aboard Thomas and pull the whistle. There was a show performed several times during the day for children and various stalls. After the show we able to ride the steam trains throughout the day for a low cost rate. At each stop there are more shows and stalls so it is a very good day. To Christmas is not a Santa Special steam train day.
Haworth attracts many American and Japanese tourists who want to dive in the history of the Brontes. There is a museum Bronte a steep cobbled street, the Bronte waterfall and of course the moors where Cathy and Heathcliff traveled fiction. There are plenty of antique shops and tea rooms and some good hotels.
Skipton, "Gateway to the Valleys' is 10 miles away. A good starting point for a walking holiday for those who want to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Skipton also has one of the most complete medieval castles in the country and more than 900 years of age. Recreation of historical events, archery and just after their stay at Skipton Castle.
10 miles in the other direction is the Bradford City where the National Media Museum, which is the most visited museum outside London. Bradford hosts several festivals, including the Bradford Festival June and the Bradford Mela is the largest festival of its kind outside Asia. There are 4 rooms in Bradford and for those who enjoy games is not difficult to Harrogate and theater.
Living in Keighley
Although Keighley has often been beaten in the press and some people do not think that is a bad place to live. I feel safe in my house walk the streets and I have easy access to everything I want. Housing is cheap compared to many other places in the UK. You can still get a terrace 2 bedroom for less than £ 100,000 or any other type of housing at relatively low prices.
I have never had difficulty obtaining a job in or around Keighley and employment opportunities are diverse. The people are friendly and very down to earth. We spoke with a Yorkshire accent, which is not as extensive as some of the surrounding rural areas, certainly do not tell 'ee bah gum "on a regular basis!
The area in and around Keighley offers much more than what I mentioned, but I hope This article gives a good idea of my hometown.
