making Archery Arrows

Hi I'm doing archery arrows, and I'm using 3 / 8 hardwood dowels from Home Depot. I sharpened the ends of them with a knife, and I want to fire harden so that the tips are more difficult (at present, are likely to break). I'm on a small budget, and I do not want to go to buy coal. Is there any way to fire harden the tips of the arrows in a fire or something, or I have to go with coal. I can also do this in a flame in the fireplace? Or this has to be on tenterhooks?
You do not need coal for the fire hardening. All you need is a source of heat, enough to get the wood to burn, any open flame is acceptable, do not have to be a charcoal fire. Similarly, the coals are not "necessary", although it will be much more easy to control the heating process with hot coals (it is easier to see when the arrow starts a conversation, for one thing). Warning: If you allow the wood Dead Presidents (char), point can be ruined and will need to make the point – and very likely to start tightening again. For some really good information in making primitive arrows (and arcs), click here: http://primitiveways.com/ Scroll down to "primitive tools and projectiles, to Halfway down the page. There is nothing tougher arrowheads fire, but the information is still good.
