Norman Perry was only 18 when he became sergeant of arms, with their own crew weapon and weapons. He was two years too young to go abroad and sent to Borden as an instructor.

"That was not my idea of a war. I had some words with my RSM told me to put in a transfer back. I, and three months later I was in France with my old regiment. "

Norman fought in Lille to Ypres, before landing in Newport in Belgium. Separated from his gun team, and the rest of his regiment during a minor skirmish, Norman and ten men moved to Dunkirk, volunteering to carry on a stretcher from the ambulance to the hospital ship.

"The atmosphere was warm beaches and sunny – The weather was beautiful. There was no panic at all. The city was a mass of rubble but -. Which had been badly done more "

In 1941, Norman was sent to the Middle East, beginning a period of struggle throughout the world. He remembers the battles in Iraq, Suez, Egypt, Libya and Western deserts:

"The problem with the war in the desert – for both parties – is that there is no place to hide was very exciting to watch since the position was at that time. fairly high ground, open spaces and stretch out to my left in a large arc, going north, I could see all the weapons. "

It was during one of these battles, in the Sahara, Norman lost his sight, when the Germans attacked with trench mortars:

"I was teller a gun running when I got a piece of metal in each eye, at the same time. So I turned around, and something big hit me back. When I fell, I have some more bits and pieces in the right thigh. I heard a sergeant saying, "He had that ', and best army in the language he could muster, I said did not. "

Norman moved to hospital in Alexandra, 6 December 1941, only 21 years old. After five weeks, Orribay reached where the president met with Secretary of the Local Group of St. Dunstan in the search for potential Dunstaners St. He was given the option of returning to United Kingdom, or going through Cape Town, and chose the latter.

The former secretary of the founder of St. Dunstan (Sir Arthur Person) led training center in Cape Town where Norman stood. He became involved in activities such as carpentry, telephone, twisted, tennis, writing and Braille. He also visited Johannesburg to dance as part of their treatment.

"With his physiotherapists, San Dunstan did not just say – that is formed, which is right, you're on your way They organize two courses. a year before you attend to keep up with all new equipment and techniques that were going on. "
